Blockstart

Atfield's first field test of blockchain technology in an agri-tech domain - experimenting with edge solutions for data immutability, food traceability, and self-sovereign identities in agriculture.

Project Overview

Atfield approached the BlockStart programme as an agri-tech company with a primary goal: to experiment with the latest blockchain-from-the-edge solutions that could be applied in IoT scenarios.

Atfield Technologies tested, validated, and adopted BlockTac's blockchain-based solution to provide data immutability and pave a path toward food traceability, agriculture insurance, and the use of self-sovereign identities in agriculture and food production.

The Problems We Explored

  • How to verify activities taken at the field? - ensuring on-the-ground actions and observations are recorded immutably and cannot be falsified.
  • How to allow sharing data from various providers and data sources? - enabling interoperability between different data sources while preserving trust.

Field data and historical data are of great importance for the development and verification of digital twins of vineyards and orchards. Blockstart served as our first practical field test of blockchain as an agri-tech and agriculture-insurance tool.

Technical Implementation

The project enabled easy writing of Winessense sensor data to the Ethereum blockchain. To reduce the cost of writing to the public Ethereum network, Atfield used a tool that regulates the interval at which IoT data is committed to the blockchain ledger, adding an additional layer of data security.
