A blockchain-enabled network of custom radio receivers that crowdsources aircraft communication messages to create an immutable global record for aviation safety monitoring.
LedgeAIR enables a new scheme for crowdsourcing aircraft communication messages, presenting a joint effort toward global monitoring of aviation safety procedures. The system creates a blockchain of data gathered by dedicated multi-band airband receivers deployed around the world.
The device firmware acts as a data vault - a blockchain ledger with a deployed smart contract that prohibits tampering and ensures immutability of recorded data. The network of radio receivers owned by private or legal entities needs to be dense enough to secure global coverage without signal loss. The business model relies on engaging data-miners through blockchain-automated smart contracts.
Atfield designed and manufactured the receiver from scratch. The development process involved 6 months of iterative electronics and enclosure design. The final enclosure replaces 4 RF shields (8 separate parts) and at least 3 heatsinks, lowering operating temperature by an additional 15°C. A batch of 75 prototype units was produced, with the design optimised for small-series production.
